A2L-Compatible Tools and Parts
New safety protocols for A2L refrigerants will affect many of the tools and parts HVAC technicians use every day, especially when installing or repairing a system. But some of your tools of the trade are already compliant and won’t need to be replaced at all.
Discover details about the essential A2L-compatible tools and parts to stay in compliance with regulations for these more efficient refrigerants.
Key A2L-compatible tools and parts
You can continue to use many tools for either A1 or A2L HVAC systems, but for the transition to A2L, some will need to be audited, calibrated and/or updated to ensure they stay compliant when you’re working with the slightly more flammable refrigerant.
In addition, some OEM and aftermarket parts will transition to new sealed components to reduce the risk of igniting a spark.
Whether you’re adding or evacuating refrigerant, detecting a leak, or troubleshooting and repairing, make sure it's done safely with the appropriate tools. Explore the most critical of these below:
Refrigerant gauges and manifolds
To follow safety requirements for A2L refrigerant, you may need a new refrigerant gauge or manifold if you use analog, and you may need to update software if you use a digital manifold.
When measuring pressure, make sure your gauges reflect R-32, R-454B and R-410A. Hoses, while compliant, will need to have reverse-threaded adapters to connect to A2L refrigerant tanks. There will also be A2L hoses that include reverse-threaded adapters.
Vacuum pumps
When flushing out a system that uses an A2L refrigerant, such as R-454B for example, you’ll want to make sure you’re using an A2L-compatible vacuum pump and vacuum gauge. Many newer vacuum pumps may already be rated for the slightly more flammable refrigerant.
If your tool is a bit older, double-check the specifications before looking for a replacement. These will list if the vacuum pump is safe or certified for use with A2L systems, and typically offer a non-sparking switch and brushless motors.
Recovery machines
Not only do recovery machines need to be A2L compatible, but also the cylinders that will collect the refrigerant need to comply with Department of Transportation (DOT) regulations.
Leak detectors
The different types of refrigerant leak detectors also need to be rated for A2L. Tools for each method of detecting leaks, whether heated diode, ultrasonic or infrared, were previously designed for earlier types of refrigerants. Those may not be able to accurately detect A2L vapors or pinpoint A2L refrigerant leaks.
Other key A2L refrigerant parts
Safety is also top of mind when it comes to HVAC relays, contactors and wiring for A2L systems. Make sure your current stock is compatible by using intrinsically safe (IS) parts to cut down on the risk of arcing or sparking to further safeguard against ignition.
A2L tanks and adapters
A2L cylinders are different in several ways. Instead of rupture discs, they have pressure relief valves. The head has anti-counterfeit shrink wrap. And to help ensure that technicians can’t mistake new cylinders for older tanks, not only is there a red band on top of A2L cylinders, but they also have a left-handed thread.
That left-handed thread means hose adapters and fittings are essential products for compatibility with the new tanks and refrigerant charging recommendations from manufacturers.
Two of the most critical adapters you’ll need—along with the manufacturer part numbers to stock your inventory—are the reverse-thread adapters and liquid charging adapters.
Safety and compliance tools for A2L refrigerants
Much of what you already carry in your truck will work well on either A1 or A2L systems. The need for extra safety precautions comes from the slightly higher risk of flammability.
That means you’ll see no change with the following tools when working on A2L systems:
If you use electric hand tools, double-check that they’re rated for A2L refrigerants and non-sparking.
Fire extinguishers you keep on hand should be Class B dry powder for the newer refrigerants.
