U.S. Green Building Council
As a gold member of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC), Ferguson is working toward a prosperous and sustainable future. USGBC’s mission is green building for everyone through the framework of Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED). Certification through this globally recognized rating system helps create more efficient buildings that save on costs and provide a competitive advantage.
A contractor can be LEED accredited, indicating their proficiency in standards of sustainable design, construction and operations. Buildings can earn a range of LEED credits, which then go toward LEED certification levels: certified, silver, gold and platinum.
Certifications for sustainability
Ferguson tracks the following environmental certifications for sustainable products:
ENERGY STAR: This government mark of energy efficiency is based on performance and applies to products, homes, buildings and industrial plants. ENERGY STAR certified appliances and products include heat pumps and furnaces, air conditioners, ductless heating and cooling, washers and dryers, refrigerators, lighting and much more.
ECOLOGO: UL Solutions bases ECOLOGO® Certification on a product’s overall sustainability and demonstrates reduced environmental impact. UL Solutions reviews the entire life cycle for rigorous criteria, and certification falls under the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) Type 1 ecolabel. ECOLOGO products include soaps, detergents, cleaners and more.
EPA Design for the Environment (DfE): The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Office of Pollution Prevention and Toxics (OPPT) and Office of Pesticide Programs (OPP) jointly administers the Design for the Environment certification program. Antimicrobial products such as disinfectants and sanitizers are tested for their impact on human health and the environment, performance, packaging and ingredients.
Forest Stewardship Council Certification: The FSC® protects healthy and resilient forests, and the council’s certification helps ensure that wood used comes from responsibly managed forests. Wood products, including indoor and outdoor furniture, homeware, decking, tools, supplies and more, that earn the FSC certification have met rigorous standards for ethical production.
WaterSense: Sponsored by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, this voluntary program creates partnerships for water-efficient products. A third party certifies that WaterSense labeled products are at least 20% more efficient with water than the average product in that category and perform as well as or better than others. And the label isn’t just for plumbing parts, toilets, showerheads and faucets—now even buildings can be certified as WaterSense. Builders can also show they construct homes that meet these specifications.
Green Seal: A pioneer in the ecolabel movement, Green Seal® certifies products, services and spaces for performance, health and sustainability. This global nonprofit organization developed its standards based on an open, transparent scientific process. Products that have earned Green Seal certification include detergents, cleaners, tools and supplies, as well as paints, adhesives and sanitary paper.
